Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. SST is showing a different number of clicks/views/etc. than X/Y/Z. Why?

There are a couple of reasons why the values shown by SST are different than those shown by AdSense, YPN or whatever other service you're using.

First, the method that those services use to filter clicks is not made public, and so there's no way for us to know exactly how to filter clicks to make them match those services' figures exactly.

Second, different web browsers (and different configurations of the same browser) handle the HTML objects differently, and don't always respond exactly as they should to capture clicks and views, etc. Partial page loads, disabled javascript, and a host of other issues also contribute to the numbers being different.

Rather than focusing on the exact numbers as they compare to the numbers given by the service itself, use the data that is captured by SST to further increase your bottom line by looking at where the majority of your clicks and interest are coming from. Should you be focusing more on the search engines? On getting quality links from related sites? Articles? It's this data, provided by SST, that makes it so powerful. Try not to get too caught up in making the numbers match exactly.

  2. Some of the clicks on the heatmaps seem to be a little off. Why?

On the heatmaps, sometimes you'll see clicks shown in the general area of say, an AdSense ad, but not actually within the ad block itself. There are a couple of reasons that this can happen.

The primary reason this happens is that the person moves their mouse after clicking the ad and leaving the page. Unfortunately, javascript is limited in its ability to record the exact mouse position within the exact fraction of a second that the click is generated, and so if the visitor moves their mouse before actually exiting the page, the recorded mouse position can be a little off, though it will almost always reflect the general area of the click.

Second, though less common, is that if a person's browser is not maximized, this can sometimes cause the ad blocks to be positioned slightly differently on their screen, so that the recorded click is not quite within the ad block on a "standard", maximized screen. The heatmaps show the click positions against this "standard" screen, and so the click may appear to have occured outside the ad when it really did not.
